Prestwick; The first Royal Burgh of Scotland, and a Burgh of Barony which can be traced back to 983 to the reign of King Kenneth II. The Burgh of Barony is attributed to King James VI (Scotland) Ist of England. Prestwick is also an ancient Eccclesiatical Burgh, originally belonging to Paisley Abbey. The patron saint of Prestwick is St. Nicholas, the patron saint of children, whose image appears on the town's Coat of Arms. The ruined 'Auld Kirk' of St Nicholas, was originally the centre of the town, and was closed in 1837. It's congregation moved to the new Church of St Cuthberts', which was built by Robert Burns' nephew.
